A True Italian Romantic!!!
Roberto Anselmi had always dreamt of buying back his grandfathers vineyards - vineyards that had to be sold following the economic crisis that befell Italy at the tail end of WW2. This dream was inspired by his strongly held romantic vision of a land that inspires strong values, deep feelings, the right kind of traditions and a way of living that is with the land and for the land.
About the Winemaker
And finally, after first working in his father's winery, then becoming a tenant vine grower, the dream finally became true. The property of Roberto's Dreams extends to 70 hectares situated on the highest slopes of the hills between Monteforte and Soave. The best vine growing hill in this renowned area is Foscarino to the NW of Monteforte. And right on top of this hill is Roberto's dream vineyard, a mini paradise. From here on the clearest of mornings you get the most marvellous view across the Po valley as far as the Appennines. Roberto's vines are south facing on volcanic tuff and partial limestone, their quality further enhanced by a close pruning, "vending vert" and by meticulous selection of the grapes, all according to Roberto's philosophy for producing a fruitier, more complex, and more aromatic wine with more body and a longer shelf life.
As well as his vineyards, Roberto is also the wine maker with his winery located in Monteforte d’Alpone, a little town immersed in the hills of Verona (in Veneto, region of Northern Italy). Annual production is between 650,000 and 700,000 bottles of wine.
About the Wine
The "San Vincenzo" is 70% Gargenega with a blend of Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc.
Garganega is a grape that is relatively unknown but you may be surprised to know it is the 11th most planted grape in Italy and is the star grape (making up at least 70% of the blend) in one of the most common white wines from Italy, Soave. It is an abundantly vigorous grape and good growers such as Roberto need to keep the yields low for its discreet aromatic qualities to show in the wine.
The grapes are picked at the end of September and the first 3 weeks of October and spend 6 months in steel vats with natural yeasts and no decanting. This results in a marvellous medium bodied light straw coloured wine, dry and fresh, with notes of citrus fruit, with an aroma that is also crisp and pure, with scents of minerals, lemon and lime, apricot and yellow apples.
San Vincenzo" is an ideal accompaniment to smoked or grilled fish, shellfish, lobster salad and roast chicken.
Enjoy :)
