The Cheese is Optional!
Zonte's Footstep is a proudly independent Australian wine company. They take their vineyards and their wine very seriously, but definitely not themselves.
They came about back In 2003 when a group of mates pooled their old white utes and new-ish tractors to grow the best grapes from the best vineyards. Today their wines are at the vanguard of a revolution of Australian wine styles.
The Zonte's Footstep 'Baron von Nemesis' Shiraz 2009 is a Barossa blood red – i.e. a deep crimson with a purple hue, with a nose of super blackberries and pure unadulterated 99% Cocoa chocolate. Lifted blood plum and raspberries and some dark pepper and brambly spice smells. You taste the generous black fruits, like mulberries and boysenberries, a full and frank Shiraz start, and then move into classic Barossa; generous, flavoursome and super sweet blackberry pie with dark, dry chocolate mouth feel. The after palate begins with sweet fruit then tightens up with fine fruit and oak tannin. Great flavour and composition. Sweet spice cuts through with hints of jamminess. There is youthful austerity as you would expect from such a classic old school Shiraz, but there is also plenty of fineness to the tannin and dark chocolate nuances in the lengthy finish.
This is the fourth Baron Von Nemesis, and the wine makers couldn’t have wished for more. Great richness, but great line and balance. The winemakers at their cheeky best “imagine drinking this wine with hard local cheeses - the cheese is optional”.
We agree.
Enjoy:)
