Holm Oak Pinot Noir 2011

Grapes & Lager

92 James Halliday Points

5 Star Winery

Bright crimson; the restrained bouquet offers glimpses of pure red cherry, spice, fresh herbs and game; the palate reveals more, with tightly wound bright red fruits in abundance, fine-grained tannins and a plush finish; generosity with structure. - James Halliday

Holm Oak Vineyards was established in 1983, and takes its name from the Holm Oak trees planted on the property.

The vineyard is leased by Rebecca and her husband Tim Duffy. Rebecca is a qualified winemaker with 10 years of winemaking experience including vintages in McLaren Vale, Coonawarra, Napa Valley and Western Australia. Tim is an agronomist with extensive viticultural experience.

Holm Oak is one of the few smaller family owned wineries who grow, make and bottle their own wines on site. This allows for greater individuality of the wines as they have full control of their wines from the vineyard through to the bottle. The individual attention that they are able to devote to each parcel of fruit ensures that each wine has its own unique personality.

2012 sees the continual evolution of our Pinot Noir, for the first time we had access to some different Pinot clones from our own vineyard, including 115, 777 and MV6 which I think has resulted in cleaner fruit characters and a more sophisticated tannin structure. In 2012 we fully destemmed the fruit and this Pinot was 100% wild fermented. 30% of the wine was matured in a variety of new French oak barriques and the remainder in 1-4 year old barriques for 10 months.

An interesting and complex nose that displays lifted cherry and floral aromatics with liquorice, spice and just a hint of reduction adding complexity. The palate has lovely firm, savoury and tannins and beautiful fruit concentration.

Enjoy :)
